PREPARING INDUSTRY'S FUTURE LEADERS

RISE INTERNSHIPS

RISE was born out of frustration our clients were seeing from the lack of staff diversity with the engineering and contracting firms who perform their work. The result was RISE – which recruits diverse engineering students attending college anywhere in America, but who attended high school in the area. Students are trained and coached, but must compete for internship opportunities. The ultimate goal is to retain these students in the local marketplace upon graduation. The program has been highly successful.

ABOUT RISE

RISE (Regional Internships in Science and Engineering) is a career and professional development program for college students originally from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) Sanitary Sewer Service Area (SSSA). The program provides meaningful work experiences for students and an opportunity to build long lasting working relationships between students and MMSD service providers (construction contractors, engineering designers, consultants and planning firms) in an effort to expose students to opportunities and prepare them for increased success in the Greater Milwaukee engineering infrastructure job market. The program is sponsored by MMSD and is managed by Prism Technical Management & Marketing Services (Prism), which also conceived and developed the program.

More than 65 students have landed internships since 2009 since RISE began. Employers who have participated in the program include AECOM, Alfred Benesch & Co., Aquarius Technologies, Aqua-Vitae, Benesch, Boldt, Brown & Caldwell, CH2M Hill, CG Schmidt, City of Milwaukee, Dairyland Energy Solutions, Dakota Intertek, Donahue & Associates, Gestra Engineering, Gilbane Building Company, GRAEF, Hanging Gardens, HNTB, JF Ahern, JMB & Associates, Mechanical, Inc., Mortenson Construction, NEXT Electric, North Wind Tech, Pieper Electric, Platt Construction, Ramboll Water Americas, Rawson Contractors, Ruekert-Mielke, SEH, Strand Associates, Inc., Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commision, Symbiont, The Concord Group, Veolia, Veterans Electric, Walbec Group, WasteCap, White Lake Dock & Dredge and many more.

Current and past students have attended Marquette University, University of Wisconsin -Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin – Platteville, University of Wisconsin (Madison), the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Columbia University (NY), Pennsylvania State University, Western Michigan University, Tuskegee University and St. Louis University, just to name a few.

The goal of the program is to ensure that science and engineering students from the Greater Milwaukee area, especially those from underrepresented populations, get an opportunity, are connected with local firms, and show the firms and themselves their capabilities, hopefully leading to a professional relationship upon graduation.

RISE IS CURRENTLY SEEKING STUDENTS STUDYING ENGINEERING TO BE PLACED IN PAID INTERNSHIPS

The Regional Internships in Science & Engineering (RISE) program is currently seeking students studying engineering who are interested in interviewing for PAID internship opportunities available this season.  We are specifically recruiting engineering majors studying architectural, civil, environmental, electrical, mechanical and construction management.  Students will also receive leadership development training during their internship engagement.

Please contact Noel Starks, Senior Project Coordinator, to apply or to answer specific questions at nstarks@prismtechnical.com or 414-436-9696.
